Long Beach, Calif. - For just the second time in 2006 the Pacific women's soccer team suffered defeat, opening Big West Conference play with a 2-0 loss to Long Beach State on Friday, September 29. The loss dropped the Tigers to 8-2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference action while the 49ers improved to 9-2-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big West.
The loss is the first road blemish for the Tigers this season after posting a perfect 3-0 road record and a 1-1 neutral record coming into the game.
A quick start had the Tigers playing from behind as the 49ers opened the game with a score just 13 minutes into the contest. Sarah Strohl posted her second goal of the season when she headed in a deflected corner kick from Hayley Bolt. The corner was initiated by Kim Silos.
Ten minutes later the 49ers struck for the second time, again taking advantage of a set corner piece in the Tigers' defensive half. After assisting on the first goal, Bolt scored her fifth goal of the season, heading in a corner from Yeraldy Hurtado in the 22nd minute.
For the game the Tigers were outshot 15-8 overall, marking the first time this season an opponent has outperformed the Tigers on the offensive end. Senior Carmen Padilla (San Jose, Calif.) led the Tigers with two shots while in goal junior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) posted six saves.
The Tigers will continue Big West Conference action on Friday, October 6, as they play host to defending conference champions, the Cal State Fullerton Titans. The game is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
