Fresno, Calif.- The Pacific women's volleyball team fell to 2005 Final Four participant Santa Clara by the score of 3-0 in the opening game of the Fresno State Invitational on Friday, Aug. 25.
With the loss, the Tigers fall to 0-1 on the year, while the Broncos improve to 1-0.
The Tigers got off to good start, matching the No. 6 Broncos point for point as the two teams were tied 14-14. Santa Clara, however, scored the next five points of the first game, including two on aces from Caroline Walters to take a 19-14 lead. Pacific was unable to recover in the first game, falling 30-21.
Pacific burst out of the gate again in game two as the Tigers held a 7-4 lead after redshirt freshman Meagan MimMack (Upland, Calif.) slammed down her second kill of the match. The lead, unfortunatley was short lived, as Santa Clara scored five straight points to take a 9-7 edge. The Tigers held Santa Clara to its lowest hitting percentage in the match at .270, but could not regain the lead, dropping game two 30-24.
Game three saw once again saw the two teams battle back and forth in the early going as the Tigers trailed by just one at 8-7. From that point, the Broncos took control, scoring 11 of the next 14 points to take a 19-10 lead. Santa Clara went on to take the game and the match, 30-20.
Sophomore Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) led the Tigers with nine kills in the match, while junior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.) and Kara Uhl (Cypress, Calif.) each finished with eight kills. Santa Clara's Kim McGiven led all attackers with 17 kills.
The Broncos finished the match with a .365 hitting percentage, while the Tigers posted a .097 average.
Pacific will be back in action on Saturday, Aug. 26 as the Tigers take on host Fresno State at 7 p.m. in the second game for both teams at the Fresno State Invitational.
