Pacific to Take on Boston College in NCAA Tournament First Round Matchup

Stockton, Calif. - Pacific is the No. 13 seed in the Minneapolis Regional, and play No. 4 seed Boston College in the NCAA Tournament this Thursday in Salt Lake City ... Pacific has won 13 of the last 14 games and have claimed a third straight Big West Conference title ... Pacific defeated Cal Poly 68-57 in the Semifinal Round of the Big West Conference Tournament and Long Beach State 78-70 in the Championship Game to claim the 2006 Big West Tournament title ... With the victory, Pacific earned a berth in the NCAA Tournament for the eighth time.

RADIO: All Tiger basketball games are broadcast live on KSTN (1420 AM) in Stockton, ESPN Radio (970 AM) in Modesto ... Mike Millerick calls the play-by-play ... Thomason played at Pacific from 1968-71 and was a member of the 1970-71 team that advanced to the West Regional in Salt Lake City ... The Tigers lost their first matchup - 89-65 against Long Beach State, but bounced back in the consolation game to knock off Brigham Young 84-81 ... Thomason had 19 points in the first game and 11 against BYU ... Assistant Coaches Adam Jacobsen and Aaron Woliczko were members of the 1996-97 Tiger team that advanced to the NCAA's ... Woliczko appeared in the game, but Jacobsen was redshirting that year due to a knee injury.

Big West Tournament Championship Game Pacific 78, Long Beach State 70: Behind huge games from seniors Johnny Gray (Agoura Hills, Calif.) and Christian Maraker (Varberg, Sweden) as well as a strong defensive effort down the stretch, the Pacific Tigers men's basketball team earned its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 78-70 win over Long Beach State in the Big West Conference Tournament Final on Saturday, Mar. 11 ... The win moved Pacific to 24-7 on the season, while Long Beach State dropped to 18-12 ... The turning point in the game came with Pacific leading 59-58 with just over eight minutes to play ... Maraker turned the game in the Tigers' favor on back-to-back plays as the Big West Player of the Year nailed a three-pointer from the top of the arc to give Pacific a 62-58 lead ... Then Maraker stepped in front of a Long Beach State pass on the defensive end and fed junior Anthony Ezparza (Bakersfield, Calif ), who finished the play with a fastbreak layup to push the Tigers lead to six points at 64-58 with 7:52 remaining in the game ... After two missed treys from Long Beach State, junior Michael White (Capitola, Calif.) made it an eight point game with two free throws, lifting the Tigers to a 66-58 advantage with 6:35 left to play ... With the lead the Tigers clamped down their defensive pressure on the outside, to take away the 49ers best weapon, the three-point shot ... Long Beach State was just 1-for-10 from beyond the arc in the final eight minutes, after the 49ers had made 12 of 24 treys up to that point ... Earlier in the game, it was the Tigers that benefited from the three-point shot ... Trailing 16-12 midway through the first half, the Tigers went on a 18-4 run to take a 30-20 lead with 6:43 left in the half ... Freshman Steffan Johnson (Kent, Wash.) led the spurt for the Tigers as he sank two of the Tigers' four trifectas during the run ... Pacific stretched its lead to as much as 14 points at 42-28 with 2:35 left in the half, but Long Beach State scored the final eight points of the first half to send the game to the break at 42-36 ... Maraker went 9-for-11 from the field as he led the Tigers with 23 points and 11 rebounds for his 16th double-double of the season ... Gray added 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting for the Tigers, to earn Tournament MVP honors ... Maraker also earned All-Tournament honors.

Big West Tournament Semifinal Pacific 68, Cal Poly 57: Pacific advanced to the Big West Tournament Championship Game for the third straight year with a 68-57 win over Cal Poly on Friday, Mar. 10 ... With the win, the Tigers moved to 23-7 on the season, while Cal Poly finished its season at 10-19 ... Tied at 55-55 with just over 3:30 remaining in the game, the Tigers closed the game on a 13-2 run to earn a berth in the Big West Tournament Finals ... Senior Christian Maraker (Varberg, Sweden) sank two free throws to push the Tigers back out in front 57-55 ... Following a defensive stop, Pacific got two more free throws from senior Johnny Gray (Agoura Hill, Calif.) to make it a 59-55 game ... Following another defensive stop, Pacific senior Mike Webb (Lancaster, Calif.) nailed his first three point shot of the night to make it a 62-55 game with 1:25 remaining in the contest ... The Tigers would go on to add six more points on free throws by Gray, Webb and Maraker to cement the victory ... Gray led Pacific with 18 points in the game, while Maraker had 12 points, Webb finished with 11 points and junior Michael White (Capitola, Calif.) had 10 points ... MARAKER AND THOMASON EARN TOP 2005-06 BIG WEST CONFERENCE AWARDS: Pacific senior forward Christian Maraker (Varberg, Sweden) was named Big West Conference Player of the Year, while Tiger head coach Bob Thomason was named Big West Conference Coach of the Year when the conference's yearly awards were announced on Monday, March 6 ... It is the third consecutive year that Pacific has swept the top two awards ... Maraker, along with senior Johnny Gray (Agoura Hills, Calif.) were named to the All-Big West Conference First Team ... Freshmen Anthony Brown (Sacramento, Calif.) and Steffan Johnson (Kent, Wash.) earned Big West Conference All-Freshman Team honors ... Maraker was the catalyst behind a third straight Big West regular season championship for the Tigers, leading the conference in both points (16.3 ppg) and rebounding (9.7 rpg) in league games ... PACIFIC SIGNS FOUR FOR 2006-07: University of the Pacific Head Men's Basketball Coach Bob Thomason announced today the signing of four student-athletes to letters of intent for the 2006-07 season. Igor Fishbeyn, DeAngelo Garrett, Solomon HorseChief and C.J. Morgan will all enter Pacific in the fall of 2006. Fishbeyn is a 6-9 center from San Francisco, Calif. He is a sophomore at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz after spending his freshman season at Great Falls University in Montana. Last year at Great Falls, Igor averaged 7.4 points and 3.6 rebounds per game, while shooting 50% from the field and 57% from the free throw line. "Igor is a big, strong and skilled post player," said Thomason. "He has the ability to make three-pointers, as well as score on the block." Garrett comes to Pacific from Northern Oklahoma College in Tonkawa, Oklahoma. A 6-8 forward/center, Garrett averaged 8.2 points and 4.7 rebounds per game for the Jets last year as a freshman. The team captain, he shot 52% from the field and averaged a steal per game. "DeAngelo is a power forward who will be able to play center for us as well," said Thomason. "He will bring an excellent inside presence to the team. He is a great young man with a tremendous upside." HorseChief is a 6-3 guard from Redlands Community College in El Reno, Oklahoma. He averaged 8.2 points, 5.1 steals and 2.7 steals per game in his first year at Redlands. He was an All-Bi State League Honorable Mention selection after leading his team to a 27-4 record and undefeated mark in conference games. He graduated in 2004 from Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. He averaged 14.2 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.0 steals per game while as a senior in 2004. "Solomon is a very versatile guard and can play both guard spots," said Thomason. "He is a very smart, heady player, with an excellent feel for the game." Morgan is a 6-0 guard from Elk Grove, Calif. He is a senior at Franklin High School in Elk Grove, where he was an Sacramento Bee All-Metro selection after leading the team to a 25-7 record. Morgan set a Sac-Joaquin Section playoff record last season with 52 points in a semifinal victory over Modesto. He averaged 18.3 points and 3.4 rebounds per game last season at Franklin HS, earning all-leauge honors and team MVP accolades. He was chosen as a 2005-06 All-America Honorable Mention by Street and Smith's College Basketball 2005-06 Yearbook. "C.J. is a tremendous shooter who has range to 25 feet," said Thomason. "We feel he can come in and help us be successful at both guard positions."

NEIMEYER TO REDSHIRT: Tiger freshman Casey Neimeyer is redshirting the 2005-06 season ... He came to Pacific from Woodland Christian High School, where he was the Central Valley Christian League MVP his senior season ... He helped lead the Cardinals to a 13-1 league record in 2004-05 under coach Doug Brown ... He will also pitch for Pacific on the Tiger baseball team.

FLORES SUSPENDED: Senior center Miguel Flores has been suspended from the team indefinitely for academic reasons ... He averaged 2.9 points and 2.0 rebounds over the first 11 games.

HURLEY LEAVES TEAM: Freshman guard Kevin Hurley (Fresno, Calif.) has left the team for personal reasons ... Hurley appeared in just two games for the Tigers, scoring three points.

TIGERS FREE THROWS IN FINAL TWO MINUTES: Pacific is shooting 84.7% (72-85) from the free throw line over the final two minutes of games this season.
