Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's basketball team dropped a 65-56 contest to the San Jose State Spartans on Wednesday, Dec. 27.
With the loss the Tigers completed their pre-conference schedule with a 6-7 record, while San Jose State improved to 1-12 on the season.
The Tigers jumped out of the gates quickly as Pacific raced to a 16-6 lead with 13:24 remaining in the first half. Long range bombs ignited the Pacific offense as junior Kelsey Lavender (Lake Oswego, Ore.) and freshman Jake Kelly (Sacramento, Calif.) each hit two three-pointers to start the Tigers' early run.
Pacific extended its lead to as much as 13 points in the first half at 23-10 with 11:44 remaining and took a 33-25 lead into the half.
The Spartans and Tigers battled back and forth through the opening minutes of the second period. With just over 15 minutes remaining in the game, San Jose State drew within six points at 41-35.
The Tigers responded with an 8-0 run as Kelly nailed a trifecta, sophomore Renee Roberts (Lodi, Calif.) followed with another three-pointer, then sophomore Karen Dawkins (Colorado Springs, Colo.) made it a 49-35 contest with short jump shot to give Pacific its largest lead of the game.
Moments later, the Tigers matched that lead as senior Jerise Freeman (Wichita, Kan.) sank a running layup to push Pacific's lead back to 14 at 54-40 with 10:09 remaining.
Unfortunately for the Tigers, the Spartans scored the next 20 points in the contest to take a 60-54 lead and closed the game on a 25-2 run to claim the 65-56 victory.
Kelly led the Tigers with 14 points in the contest, while Dawkins scored 11 points.
Brittany Powell led the way for San Jose State with 20 points and 16 rebounds, while Alisha Hicks finished with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 30 as Pacific begins Big West Conference play at Cal State Northridge. The game is scheduled to tip at 4 p.m.
