Santa Barbara, Calif. - The Pacific women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 match to UC Santa Barbara on Friday, November 10, on the road at Robertson Gym. With the loss the Tigers fell to 7-17 overall and 3-8 in conference action while the Gauchos improved to 15-11 overall and 7-6 in Big West action.
Game scores for the match were: 22-30, 24-20, 26-30.
A quick start by the Gauchos had the Tigers playing from behind for the entire first game as UC Santa Barbara quickly opened up a 5-1 lead to start the match. Trading points the lead grew to seven at 12-5 causing the Tigers to use their first timeout of the match. After the break, Pacific responded by taking five of the next six points to climb back within three points, however, another run by the Gauchos put the Tigers down by eight at 22-14. Sophomore Alexa Anderson (Los Gatos, Calif.) led a four point charge by the Tigers, posting three consecutive kills as Pacific cut UC Santa Barbara's lead in half at 23-19. The game of runs continued as the Gauchos pulled away at the end, scoring the seven of the final 10 points to take the opening game, 30-22.
Game two saw a much different start for Pacific as the Tigers came out defensively, digging balls that they were unable to get to in the opening game. Trading points with the Gauchos, the Tigers took their first lead of the match at 12-11 in the game. Leading by as much as two and trailing by as little as three at different points of the game, the Tigers held tough throughout, but a defensive spree including two blocks by the Gauchos' front line leading 23-20 spurred on a late 4-0 run that broke open the game and essentially sealed the game two victory for the Gauchos.
The third and final game played out much like game two of the match with both teams trading points and mini runs throughout the game. Down 8-11, the Tigers rolled off three points led by junior Johanna Hilbers (Omaha, Neb.) who posted a kill and a block to get the Tigers all square with the Gauchos. Pacific would stake a 15-12 lead in the game after pulling off a 7-1 run in the middle of the contest. Once again trading mini runs, the Gauchos rallied back to knot the game at 18-18. Tied at 21-21, Pacific posted the next four points to give them a 25-21 lead, a run that included a Hilbers' ace. Once again, UC Santa Barbara crawled back into the game with five straight points to take the 26-25 lead. Anderson broke the streak for the Tigers with a kill from the back row to tie the game at 26-26, but that would be all for Pacific as the Gauchos ran off the final four points of the game to take home the three game win over the Tigers.
For the match, Anderson led all attackers with 19 kills while Hilbers finished with 11 kills and two aces. Sophomore Natalia Tomaszewska (Marklowice, Poland) tallied 14 kills to round out the Tigers' offense. For the Gauchos, Olivia Wadowski posted 16 kills while Jamie Garbisch and Lauren McLaughlin tallied 13 and 10, respectively.
The Tigers will next be in action on Friday, November 11, as they travel to Cal Poly to take on the Mustangs in Big West play. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
