Oct. 13, 2006

Box Score

Irvine, Calif. - Despite a rain shortened game that was called in the 85th minute due to lighting, the Pacific women's soccer team picked up their second consecutive conference win with a 2-0 victory over UC Irvine on Friday, October 13. With the win the Tigers moved to 10-3-1 overall and 2-2 in conference action while the Anteaters fell to 3-10 overall and 0-4 in Big West play.

With the win the Tigers insured their 11th winning season in program history and marked the eighth time in which Pacific reached double digit wins.

After a slow start to the conference season, the Tigers have picked up their pace and their offense scoring two goals for the second consecutive game. Amidst a torrential downpour, Pacific struck first as senior Carmen Padilla (San Jose, Calif.) netted for the third time this season, scoring in the 32nd minute. Padilla collected a loose ball out front of the Anteaters' and calmly fired a shot past Gina Mahanna, UC Irvine's netminder, to put the Tigers up 1-0.

Twenty-two minutes later and with a slight break in the rain, Padilla struck again netting her 20th career goal. With her strike, Padilla moved into a tie for No. 4 on the all-time scoring list at Pacific, sharing the space with Gabby Olivares (2000-03) and Regina McGee (2002-04).

Up two goals, the Tigers went on cruise control until the 85th minute when the game was halted and called due to nearby lightning.

Overall, Pacific outshot the Anteaters 9-to-6 with junior Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) producing two saves on the night. The shutout was Souza's seventh of the season and 13th of her career.

The Tigers will continue Big West play on Sunday, October 15, as they travel to Cal State Northridge to take on the Matadors. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
