Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers women's soccer team suffered a hard fought, 1-0, loss to Long Beach State on Friday, September 30, in the Big West Conference opener for both teams. The Tigers fell to 6-4-1 overall and 0-1 in the Big West with the loss, while Long Beach State moved to 8-2-1 on the season and 1-0 in conference.
In a tale of two halves, the Tigers came up on the wrong side of another 1-0 game, the fourth such contest in a row for Pacific. In the first half, the 49ers were able to control play on both sides of the ball, outshooting the Tigers 6-1. Long Beach State netted the lone goal of the game in the 33rd minute on a goal by Hayley Bolt, her fifth of the season. Bolt's shot deflected off of a Tiger defender and into the right side of the goal after getting a look at the net off of a cross from the right side of the box by Sahar Hagden.
Despite finding themselves down by one and outshot by five, the Tigers came back reenergized in the second half, taking control of the game with seven shots to the 49ers four. Pacific had their chances throughout the half, sending shots within inches of the net. Sophomore Montez Harrison (Oakland, Calif.) took the Tigers' best shot of the night, striking a ball from 30 yards deep that sailed just high over the crossbar and the outstretched arm of Liz Ramos, the 49ers 'keeper.
On the night, sophomore 'keeper Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) played brilliantly in net for the Tigers, producing six saves including a shot that forced her to dive to her left to punch the ball out. Ramos for Long Beach State tallied two saves in goal on the night.
The loss was the first home loss of the season for the Tigers as they are 4-1-0 on the year in Stagg Memorial Stadium.
Pacific will next be in action on Sunday, October 2, as they play host to the Hornets of Sacramento State. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 pm at Stagg Stadium.
