Tigers Take Down San Francisco, 2-1, In Overtime

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's soccer team continued their strong start to the 2005 season, topping the University of San Francisco, 2-1, in overtime on August 28. With the win the Tigers improved to 2-0-0 on the season while the Dons fell to 0-2-0.

With the game tied at one after regulation the Tigers' looked towards their offensive captain, junior Carmen Padilla (San Jose, Calif.), for a spark. Padilla responded in the third minute of overtime, netting the Tigers' game-winner on a breakaway goal that was setup by a clearance punt by sophomore 'keeper Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.). The goal was Padilla's first of the 2005 season and 16th of her career. Padilla finished the weekend with five points after tallying three assists in Pacific's Friday night game. The assist was Souza's first of her career.

The Tigers' found themselves in the position to win their second game of the season after tying the game at one goal apiece in the 78th minute of the game. Sophomore Carla Vellutini (Elk Grove, Calif.) found the back of the net for the game-tying goal and her first of the season on an unassisted one-on-one play with the `keeper. Vellutini was able to dribble past the Dons' 'keeper giving herself a shot at an open net.

Defensively, the Tigers' held tough for the second consecutive game as they held San Francisco to one goal on 13 shots. Souza got her first start in goal for the Tigers in 2005 and produced three saves on the day. The Dons' lone goal came in the 47th minute as Laina Ceddia placed a shot into the upper left corner on a restart off a Pacific foul.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, Sept. 2 as they travel to Seattle, Wash. to take on the No. 30 Washington Huskies in the opening game of the Husky Invitational. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
