MILWAUKEE, Wisc. - The Pacific Tigers women's volleyball team collected their first victory of the season with a 3-0 sweep of North Dakota State on Saturday, Aug. 27. Game scores for the match were 30-23, 30-21, 30-18. With the win, the Tigers moved to 1-1, while the Bison dropped to 0-2.
Defense keyed the Tigers victories in both games one and two as Pacific held North Dakota State to a hitting percentage of .070 and .048. Leading 11-7 in game one, Pacific scored seven straight points as Allison Ianni (East Lansing, Mich.) had two service aces and the Tigers forced three attacking errors by the Bison to take a commanding 18-8 lead in game one. Pacific went on to take the first game 30-23.
Game two saw the Tigers build an early 11-4 advantage as Pacific forced the Bison into five attacking errors, while four different Tigers had kils, led by two from senior Sidney Bennett (Louisville, Ky.). Pacific stretched the lead to as much as ten at 20-10 and closed the game with four straight points to take a 2-0 lead with a 30-21 win.
In the final game of the match, the Tigers offense delivered their best performance of the morning as Pacific hit .379 in game three. The Tigers converted 16 kills on just 29 swings and committed just five errors in the final game. Bennett notched six kills of her 12 match kills, while senior Ashley Groothuis (Aurora, Neb.) had five of her match-high 13 kills to lead the Pacific attack.
The Tigers will conclude play at the Marquette Kick-Off Classic later on Saturday, Aug. 27 as Pacific plays host Marquette at 7 p.m. (CT)
