STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific men's basketball team extended its winning streak to 13 games with a 71-61 Big West Conference victory over UC Irvine on Thursday, Feb. 3, at the Alex G. Spanos Center. With the victory, the Tigers improved to 17-2 overall and 11-0 in Big West action. UC Irvine fell to 10-8 overall (4-6 Big West.)
The Tigers knew they were going to be in for a fight from the opening horn as the Anteaters burst out to a 10-0 lead within the first two minutes of the contest. After the initial shock wore off, the Tigers settled in and methodically picked away at the deficit, led by senior David Doubley (Oakland, Calif.) who sank Pacific's first eight points. Despite the hole at the beginning, the Tigers took a four point lead into the break at 30-26.
While at times it appeared that the Tigers were going to break open the game, every time, UC Irvine had an answer as they went 7-17 from behind the arc. While the Anteaters shot well from deep, the Tigers won the game from behind the stripe, hitting 25-of-29 free throw attempts.
Doubley led all scorers with 21 on the night, hitting 8-of-11 shots. Senior Guillaume Yango (Paris, France) finished just shy of a double-double, tallying 18 points and nine rebounds. Jasko Korajkic added 12 to round out the Tigers' double figure scoring.
The Anteaters were led by Ross Schraeder as he dropped 18 points. Greg Ethington and Jeff Gloger each finished with double digits, ending with 17 and 12, respectively.
Pacific returns to action with a Big West Conference contest against Long Beach State on Saturday, Feb. 5, at 3 p.m. at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
