Tigers Fall To UC Riverside, 2-1

Riverside, Calif. - The Pacific women's soccer team fell for the second time in Big West Conference play, dropping a 2-1 decision to UC Riverside on Friday, October 7. With the loss the Tigers fell to 7-5-1 overall and 0-2 in conference play while the Highlanders improved to 8-3-1 overall and 2-0 in the Big West.

The Tigers fell behind quickly in their second conference game, giving up two early goals to the Highlanders. UC Riverside posted its two goals of the game within six minutes of each other as the Highlanders scored on their first two shots. Vanessa Chanez notched the first goal of the game in the 10th minute as she volleyed in a pass from Jenna Leonti. Renee Scachetti was credited with an assist on the play as well as the Highlanders strung together a succession of passes to get the goal.

Moments later, in the 16th minute, Scachetti netted the Highlanders second goal of the contest as she headed in her 10th goal of the season off of another pass from Jenna Leonti.

The Tigers attempted a late comeback as sophomore Natalie McCrackin (Rio Linda, Calif.) found the back of the net for the first time in her Pacific career as she struck a left footed shot off the crossbar and into the goal from 20 yards deep. Despite the late goal, the Tigers were unable to overcome the two goal deficit from the first half.

On the day, the Tigers completely dominated the game, outshooting the Highlanders 17-to-6 and outcorning UC Riverside 6-to-1. The difference maker in the game came in the form of Tawny Poggio as she tallied seven saves in goal for the Highlanders. For the second consecutive game, the Tigers split the time in goal between junior Laura Guerin (Swampscott, Mass.) and sophomore Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.). Guerin got the start for the Tigers, relinquishing two goals in 45 minutes of action. Souza, who came in at half, notched two saves on the day on the only two shots on goal she faced.

The Tigers will look for their first conference win of the season on Sunday, October 9, as they travel to Cal State Fullerton to take on the Titans. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
