Oct. 2, 2005

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific women's soccer team earned their seventh victory of the season with a 1-0, overtime, win over the visiting Sacramento State Hornets on Sunday, October 2. The win moved the Tigers to 7-4-1 overall while the Hornets fell to 3-5-1. With their seventh win, Pacific has matched their win total from the 2004 season.

In a game that was dominated by the Tigers from beginning to end, the Tigers were forced to settle for their fourth overtime victory of the season. Pacific's leading scorer, sophomore Mandi Van Dorn (Danville, Calif.) notched her first game-winning goal of the season for the Tigers in the 97th minute of the match. Van Dorn netted the lone goal of the game on a header into the far corner of the net as she received a perfectly placed cross from sophomore Carla Vellutini (Elk Grove, Calif.) The duo had nearly hooked up seconds earlier on the same play down the left sideline, but Van Dorn's header was saved by Jennifer Lawrence for the Hornets. The goal was Van Dorn's team leading fourth of the season while the assist was Vellutini's second.

On the day, the Tigers had multiple opportunities to put the game away in regulation as they outshot the Hornets 24-to-3 overall. Pacific's offensive attack was led by sophomore Bunny Dickson (Millbrae, Calif.) as she fired off five shots, three on goal in just her second game back from injury. Pacific looked towards their bench for a spark throughout the game as junior transfer Catherine Betts (Piedmont, Calif.) played arguably her finest game for the Tigers as she roamed the entire field giving Pacific multiple offensive opportunities. Not to be outdone, sophomore tranfer Gennaka Fox (El Monte, Calif.), freshman Nicci Leon (Valencia, Calif.) and junior Felicia Weiss (Elk Grove, Calif.) tallied eight shots as a group off the bench for Pacific.

In goal for Sacramento State, Lawrence produced eight saves while the Tigers tandem of sophomore Jaime Souza (Gig Harbor, Wash.) and junior Laura Guerin (Swampscott, Mass.) were forced to just make one save. Souza played the first half of the game for the Tigers before being replaced by Guerin for the second half and overtime.

The Tigers will next be in action on Friday, October 7, as they travel to Riverside, Calif. to continue Big West Conference action with a game against the Highlanders of UC Riverside. The game is scheduled for 3:00 pm.
