Tigers defeat Cal State Northridge, 3-1

Stockton, Calif. - The Pacific Tigers women's volleyball team evened their record at 7-7 on the season with a 3-1 win over Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Oct. 1. The win moved the Tigers to 2-1 in the Big West Conference season, while Matadors fell to 3-11 overall and 1-3 in conference play.

The Tigers took game one of the matc as Pacific hit .278 with 17 kills and just seven errors, while holding the Matadors to a hitting percentage of .100 on eight kills and five errors. Tbe turning point in the first game came with the score tied at 18-18 as the Tigers rattled off five straight points. Sophomore Kara Uhl (Cypress, Calif.) gave Pacific the needed boost as she slammed down a kill, then served three aces. Senior Sidney Bennett (Louisville, Ky.) capped the run with a kill.

Game two seesawed back and forth with both teams holding leads in the final five points. The Matadors came out on top in the game as Cal State Northridge got back-to-back kills from Harmony Burdine and Kelley Hanson.

Following the break, Pacific turned up their defensive pressure as the Tigers forced 11 errors and gave up just 10 kills forcing the Matadors to hit negative at -.023. The Tigers, meanwhile, got their offense going again as Pacific had 16 kills and just five errors for an average of .262. Bennett led the Tigers in the game as she had seven kills.

The key to game four was serving as the Matadors committed seven service errors as Pacific took the match 30-24.

Pacific senior Ashley Groothuis (Aurora, Neb.) led all attackers with 21 kills, while Uhl finished with 16 and Bennett had 12 for the Tigers. The Matadors were led by 11 kills from Darla Donaldson.

The Tigers will be back in action on Thursday, Oct. 6 as Pacific hosts UC Davis at 7 p.m.
