Junior (2010-11):
Byers was recognized as an MPSF All-Academic selection and finished eighth in the 200 Back at the 2011 MPSF Championships with a time of 1:52.78. Byers claimed fifth place in the 400 IM at the Pacific Invite on Oct. 15, clocking in at 4:16.86. He had three top-five finishes versus Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 30, placing fifth in the 100 Back (56.76), 200 Back (2:01.37), and 200 IM (2:03.76). Byers swam the 400 IM in 4:20.98 against Stanford on Jan. 8, good for third. Against Cal Poly on Jan. 28, he claimed fourth in the 200 Back with a time of 2:00.20. Byers followed that with a third-place finish in the 200 IM (1:59.45) and a fourth-place finish in the 100 Fly (53.19) against UC Santa Barbara on Jan. 29.
Sophomore (2009-10):
Byers closed his sophomore season finishing fifth in the 400 IM (4:00.43), eighth in the 200 Back (1:51.22), and ninth in the 200 IM (1:52.19) at the 2010 Big West Championships. He was also part of relay teams that took fourth in both the 800 Free Relay and 400 Medley Relay and fifth in the 200 Medley Relay. Byers finished second in the 400 IM (4:13.12) at the Pacific Invite on Oct. 16. A third-place finish in the 200 IM (1:58.69) and a second-place finish in the 100 Back (53.55) highlighted his meet against Seattle U on Oct. 30. Byers had a stellar meet versus Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 31, recording three runner-up finishes, touching second in the 100 Back (54.91), the 200 Back (1:58.80), and the 200 IM (2:02.64). He claimed first place in the 400 IM against Denver on Nov. 7, clocking in at 4:14.37. He would finish second in the 200 Back (1:49.42) in the same meet. Versus UC Davis on Jan. 16, Byers took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:03.98. He followed that with a trio of top-five finishes against UC Santa Barbara, earning second in the 200 Back (1:56.30), third in the 200 IM (2:00.43), and fifth in the 100 Back (54.15).
Freshman (2008-09):
Byers capped a stellar freshman season with three top-12 finishes at the 2009 Big West Championships. He claimed fifth in the 200 Back (1:50.04), 10th in the 400 IM (4:00.06), and 12th in the 200 IM (1:52.11). Byers had his breakout meet against Fresno State on Nov. 1, earning second-place finishes in both the 200 Back (1:59.01) and the 200 IM (2:00.36). He claimed another runner-up finish in the 100 Breast against Stanford on Jan. 10, touching the wall at 1:05.44. Byers continued to open eyes in his first season, taking second in the 400 IM (4:13.02) versus UC Davis on Jan. 24, before recording three top-five finishes against Cal Poly on Feb. 6, touching second in both the 200 Back (1:58.85) and the 200 IM (1:58.49), as well as fourth in the 200 Fly (2:02.46). Byers clocked in at 1:57.02 in the 200 Back and 2:00.02 in the 200 IM versus UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 7, good for second and third place, respectively.
Bellarmine Prep HS (‘08):
Byers attended Bellarmine Prepatory High School in Tacoma, Wash. As a member of the King Aquatic Club, his best times as a junior national qualifier were 4:03.31 in the 400 IM, 1:55.43 in the 200 IM, 1:52.98 in the 200 Back, 53.21 in the 100 Back, and 1:45.21 in the 200 Free.
Personal: Byers was born in San Francisco, Calif., and is the son of Scott and Kathleen Byers. He has two siblings, Kirsten and Neil. Byers will graduate with a degree in applied mathematics and economics, and is considering becoming a coach as a future career path.
