Prior to Pacific
Hailing from the nearby city of Livermore, Patterson caught and played first base during his time at Granada High School, hitting .295 with three home runs during his junior year before rounding out his career with the Matadors by hitting .333 with one long ball in his senior season.

Following this success in his hometown, the right-hander originally took his talents to the University of Utah, but decided to return closer to home following his first semester in Salt Lake City. Making the transition to Ohlone College in Fremont, California, Patterson switched to pitching and playing the outfield, guiding the Renegades to a 37-12 record his freshman year as they finished just one game shy of the state finals. Having tallied a 15-3 overall mark in conference play, he completed his impressive season hitting .381 with 14 home runs, 53 RBI, 52 runs scored and 12 stolen bases. Leading the state in home runs in 2018-19, he also delivered on the mound, notching a 0.73 ERA in 24.2 innings pitched. In his 19 appearances, Patterson struck out 30 batters and allowed just 12 base on balls, good for a 10.95 K/9 ratio. Additionally, he also tallied a 1-1 record with 4 saves out of the bullpen.

After his remarkable freshman campaign, Patterson was tabbed the 2019 NorCal All-State/All-North Co-MVP alongside current Tiger outfielder, Charles Middleton. Furthermore, he was also selected as a JUCO All-American, earned a spot on the All-Region and All-State teams, and was named the Conference Player of the Year and JBB Two-Way Player of the Year.

Heading into 2020, Patterson was named a Preseason All-American as well as the JBB Preseason Two-Way Player of the Year. Despite the season getting cut short, he continued to dazzle between the lines in his second year at Ohlone, hitting .397 with 3 home runs, 8 doubles and 3 stolen bases before play was suspended in March 2020.
