Christopher Pond
Title: Director of Sports Medicine
Sport Responsibilities: Men's Basketball and Golf
Christopher Pond enters his 30th year as Pacific's Director of Athletic Training in 2021-22.
Pond is a certified athletic trainer by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) and oversees treatment and medical attention given to all of Pacific's intercollegiate sports.
Working closely with team doctors, Pond aids in the designing of rehabilitation programs for injured athletes. These programs are typically progressive and active in nature in order to allow athletes to return to duty in stronger, fitter fashion. Pond spends his winters as the certified athletic trainer on the bench for Pacific's men's basketball team, and was previously the Tigers' athletic trainer in charge of football before its dissolution in 1995.
In addition to his duties in the athletic department, Pond teaches in the sport sciences department as a professor of athletic injury evaluation.
He was also named an Athletics Health Care Administrator and has been a lecturer of several classes at Pacific since 1990, including anatomy, health care administration and care and prevention of athletic training.
Pond was a 1988 graduate of Utah State and spent two years as a graduate assistant at Arizona before arriving at Pacific. Pond currently resides in Stockton with his wife, Geniel. They have two children, Aaron and Ashley.
Annette Martinez
Title: Associate Director of Sports Medicine
Sport Responsibilities: Volleyball, Beach Volleyball and Softball
Annette Martinez enters her 14th year with Pacific in 2021-22 and seventh as the Associate Director of Athletic Training. Martinez works primarily with the volleyball and beach volleyball teams, as well as the Tiger Dancers.
A 2002 sport sciences graduate of Pacific, Martinez honed her skills as a student athletic trainer for the Tigers. In addition to working with Pacific’s student athletes, Martinez also worked as an athletic trainer at the USA Track and Field Championships, the East-West Shrine Football Classic and other local and regional events.
Along with her athletic responsibilities, Annette is an adjunct professor both the graduate and undergraduate Athletic Training Programs at Pacific. She is an active member of NCAA and NATA LGBTQ+ committees promoting awareness and acceptance in athletics.
Martinez finished her Master’s Degree in Kinesiology from Fresno Pacific in the spring of 2011. She resides in Stockton, with her wife, Regina and their family.
Sara Vargas
Title: Assistant Director of Sports Medicine
Sport Responsibilities: Women's Basketball, Men's and Women's Tennis
Sara Vargas returned to her alma mater as the Tigers' athletic trainer in 2011-12. In addition to her duties as the athletic trainer for the women's basketball team and men’s & women’s tennis teams, Vargas is also in charge of all pre-participation physicals for the student-athletes as they prepare for each season of competition.
Vargas graduated from University of the Pacific in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Sports Sciences with an emphasis in Athletic Training. After graduation, Vargas pursued a master’s at Utah State University. As a member of Utah State Sports Medicine, Vargas worked with the Aggies’ football and women’s soccer programs. She earned her Master’s of Science in Sports Medicine in 2011.
Vargas is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association and Far West Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Christina Brekelmans
Title: Assistant Director of Sports Medicine
Sport Responsibilities: Women's Soccer, Women's Water Polo, Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving
Christina Brekelmans has served as an Assistant Director of Athletic Training at Pacific since August of 2015, working with UOP's women's soccer, women's water polo and men's and women's swimming programs.
Outside of Pacific, her clinical experience has included work at Cal Baptist University, UC Riverside and the University of Redlands.
She has presented twice each at the Far West Athletic Trainers' Association and CBU Allied Health Symposium, focusing on a case study of chronic patellar tendinopathy and aerobics capacity in male college athletes.
In addition to her BOC certification, Brekelmans is also a member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association and is American Red Cross CPR, AED for Pro Rescuers and First Aid certified.
Brekelmans obtained her Bachelor's in Kinesiology with a concentration in Health and Human Performance from Saint Mary's College in 2009 before completing a Master of Science degree in Athletic Training and a BOC certification from Cal Baptist University in 2015.
Daniel Jo
Title: Assistant Director of Sports Medicine
Sport Responsibilities: Men's Soccer, Cross Country and Track & Field
Daniel Jo has been an Assistant Director of Athletic Training at Pacific since the fall of 2019, working with men's and women's soccer and women's cross country and track.
He is a Certified Athletic Trainer as of June 2019, earning his title by the Board of Certification. Prior to Pacific, Jo completed a sports medicine internship with UC Davis from 2015 to 2017, working with the Aggies' football and women's basketball programs.
He earned a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Biology from UC Davis in 2015, then completed his M.S. in Athletic Training from Cal Baptist in 2019.
Dominic Alejandre
Title: Assistant Director of Sports Medicine
Sport Responsibilities: Baseball and Men's Water Polo
Dominic Alejandre is in his first year as an Assistant Director of Sports Medicine at Pacific. Alejandre came to Pacific after serving as an athletic trainer in the Texas Rangers organization and the Kansas City T-Bones Baseball Club. He also spent two years as the Medical Coordinator at Altamont Performance Lab in Tracy, California.
He earned his bachelor's degree from Cal State Monterey Bay and his master's degree from the University of Arkansas.
