The Amos Alonzo Stagg Award of Honor was established in 1981 by former Graduate Manager of Athletics Bob Breeden, Pacific Alumni Director Kara Brewer, and Director of Athletics Elkin Isaac. The award recognizes alumni who participated in athletics at Pacific and achieved distinction in their professional lives through the notable examples of integrity, dedication, idealism, and team spirit that Mr. Stagg personified and to which Pacific is dedicated.
At age 70, Amos Alonzo Stagg came to the College of the Pacific in 1933 as head football coach after having to “retire” from the University of Chicago following 41 years as head coach from 1892 to 1932, which is still one of the longest head coaching tenures in the history of college football. After 14 years at Pacific, Stagg went on to serve as an assistant coach with his son Amos Jr. at Susquehanna and his final job was as kicking coach at Stockton College, the forerunner of San Joaquin Delta College.
Stagg played football as an end at Yale University and was selected to the first College Football All-America Team in 1889. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach in the charter class of 1951. Influential in other sports, Stagg developed basketball as a five-player sport and was elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame in its first group of inductees in 1959. “The Grand Old Man of Football” retired from Stockton College at the age of 96 and later died in Stockton when he was 102 years old.
