LONG BEACH, Calif. – The No. 12 University of the Pacific men's water polo team (4-4) earned its second nationally ranked victory of the season, defeating No. 6 Long Beach State (9-3) 12-11 Friday evening at the Ken Lindgren Aquatics Center.
Borisz Kasa-Gal paced Pacific offensively, totaling a team-high five goals on 10 total shot attempts.
Gabor Holl also helped guide the Tigers throughout the contest, recording three goals, three assists, and match-best six points. On the defensive end,
Enzo Fernandez posted four steals while Gabor added two.
Opening the first quarter with back-to-back goals, Pacific jumped out to a 2-0 lead following tallies from
Tamas Otto Voros and Kasa-Gal. Long Beach State quickly answered with three unanswered goals as Gabi Acosta recorded three goals in less than two minutes to give the Beach a 3-2 advantage at the end of the first eight-minute period.
In a back-and-forth second quarter, the Tigers regained the lead at 4-3 following goals from Kasa-Gal and
Marc Comabella. Both teams traded goals in the final minutes of the period as Kasa-Gal recorded his third of the first half to tie the game at six.
Long Beach State regained momentum in the third, recording three goals while holding Pacific to two to hold a narrow 9-8 lead heading into the final period of play.
Despite Long Beach State maintaining its advantage early, Pacific dominated the back half of the fourth as Holl posted two of the team's four goals to secure the 12-11 victory, the Tigers' fifth straight win over the Beach.
