STOCKTON, Calif. – Wrapping up an eight-game homestand, the Pacific baseball program hosts San Diego for the final West Coast Conference home series of the season, beginning Friday at 6 p.m. and concluding with Senior Day on Sunday at 1 p.m. from Klein Family Field.
The Tigers (20-26, 12-9 WCC) will honor and celebrate six of their seniors and graduate students on the squad, taking on the Toreros (17-28, 9-12 WCC) as the two teams battle for spots into the West Coast Conference Tournament from May 20-23 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Looking at the conference standings, the Tigers find themselves in a tie for third place with Pepperdine, sitting one game back of second-place San Francisco. The Toreros, last year's West Coast Conference regular season champions, are on the outside looking in, standing in eighth place and two games back of a three-way tie for fifth place between Portland, Saint Mary's and Seattle.
Pacific has found its form in West Coast Conference play lately, winning ten of its last 12 conference games, including seven consecutive WCC games at home going back to March 29.
The Tigers' pitching staff has been sharp, led by the efforts of redshirt junior
Zach Todd and redshirt junior
Garret Plata. The pair each threw a quality start as part of the program's first-ever sweep over LMU last weekend. Todd tossed six scoreless innings en route to being named WCC Co-Pitcher of the Week. With a career-high 11 strikeouts last time out, Todd paces Pacific with 71 strikeouts, which ranks among the top 100 pitchers nationally.
Plata continues to establish himself as one of the premier southpaws in the country, sporting a conference-low 1.78 earned run average in 60.2 innings with 63 strikeouts. His 1.78 earned run average is seventh overall nationally. Plata has thrown nine games this season of five or more innings, including five straight quality starts in league play.
Redshirt junior
Carson Revay has been the go-to arm for the Tigers' bullpen as he owns a 3.18 earned run average in 39.2 innings with eight saves. Revay was named as one of the nation's 61 top relief pitchers, earning recognition on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List. Revay is the first Tiger to receive this honor since Josh Schmidt in 2005. Revay's eight saves have him tied for second all-time in a single season at Pacific. Schmidt holds the most with 11 saves.
Junior
Braeden Schnabel, graduate student
Brendan O'Sullivan and redshirt sophomore
Robert Orr have been a three-headed monster, breathing fire into the Pacific offense with over-.300 averages. While O'Sullivan has been a key cog of setting the table, he also owns a team-leading .360 batting average in conference play with a current six-game hitting streak to boot. Orr and Schnabel have supplied some power as the former leads the team with six home runs. The two also both rank top 150 in the country in doubles with 15 and 14, respectively.
San Diego enters this week's series having dropped two of three at Portland, which is the team Pacific will play at the end of the regular season. The Toreros have a conference series win at home over Santa Clara. Most recently, USD fell to UC Irvine by a 9-4 margin in its midweek match-up.
Named WCC Player of the Week on May 4, CJ Moran batted .615 (8-for-13) at Portland last weekend, tallying two doubles, four RBI, four runs and a stolen base. Moran produced multiple hits in all three of the Toreros' games against the Pilots. Moran is second on the Toreros in team batting average with .324, trailing only Andrew Gauna and his .366 clip.
Diego Gutierrez has been San Diego's most called-upon starting pitcher this year, establishing a 5-3 record with a 5.65 earned run average in 12 starts.
Pacific and San Diego meet for the 40th, 41st and 42nd times in the all-time head-to-head history. The Tigers seek their first series win over the Toreros at home since 2014. March 25, 2018, was the last time Pacific won a home game over USD.
All three games will be broadcast live on ESPN+ with a 6 p.m. first pitch Friday, 3 p.m. first pitch Saturday and 1 p.m. first pitch Sunday. Dennis Ackerman will be on the call for those games.
Prior to Sunday's contest, the Tigers will honor
Rylan Evans,
Nathen Nino,
Brendan O'Sullivan,
Jake Tandy,
Grant MacArthur and
Blaine French. Fans should make sure to arrive early to the ballpark as parking will be impacted by graduation ceremonies taking place across campus.
