SAN FRANCISCO – Winners in five of its last six West Coast Conference games, the Pacific baseball program looks to remain hot on the road for its next conference series at San Francisco, beginning at 2 p.m. on Friday at Benedetti Diamond.
The Tigers (15-23, 7-8 WCC) are coming off of a sweep of the Broncos last weekend at home, seeking to carry that momentum over to a tall task in visiting the second-place Dons (19-19, 10-5 WCC). Pacific currently sits a game back of the top six teams in the league standings, within reach of eight-win Portland, Saint Mary's and Pepperdine. The top six teams at the end of the season will qualify for the WCC tournament from May 20-23 in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Pitching was on point last weekend in the first WCC series sweep of the season for the Tigers, throwing three consecutive quality starts from the starting rotation. Redshirt junior
Garret Plata headlines the Tigers' staff after pitching six shutout innings with six strikeouts in the series-sweeping victory over Santa Clara. With his performance, Plata was named WCC Pitcher of the Week, marking the first time a Pacific pitcher has achieved the feat since Ryan Shreve on April 15, 2019. Plata holds the best earned run average in the conference at 1.71, which also ranks top ten in the nation. His 51 strikeouts and 9.79 strikeouts per nine innings stand among the top ten of qualified pitchers in the WCC.
A beam of energy out of the bullpen, redshirt junior
Carson Revay has been a key reliever for the Tigers, sporting a 3-2 record with a 3.12 earned run average and 39 strikeouts in 34.2 innings of work. His seven saves are tied for second most in the WCC and are tied for fourth in a single season by a Pacific closer in program history.
Revay was named on Wednesday as one of the nation's 61 top relief pitchers, earning recognition on the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List. Revay is the first Tiger to receive this honor since Josh Schmidt in 2005. Schmidt represents the program's single season save leader with 11 saves.
Shifting gears to the offense, redshirt sophomore
Robert Orr continues to carry the torch with his team-leading .308 batting average and six home runs. Orr is four home runs back of Todd Bramble (2000), who had ten home runs in a single season as a shortstop, the most by a Pacific shortstop in this century. Chaz Myers (2023) and Brett Sullivan (2015) have the most home runs by a Tiger shortstop since joining the WCC in the 2014 season with seven each. Those two are tied for the second-most in that category since 2000.
Orr's counterpart across the infield, graduate student
Brendan O'Sullivan bashed a go-ahead three-run home run in game two against the Broncos last weekend, helping up his numbers to a .281 batting average and 23 RBIs – both rank second on the team. Leading the Tigers with seven multi-RBI games on the year, O'Sullivan carries a six-game hitting streak into the tilt on the Hilltop this week, going 9-for-28 (.321) in the span.
San Francisco started WCC play strong, going a combined 8-1 against Santa Clara, Seattle and San Diego at home before most recently dropping two of three on the road at Portland last weekend. The Dons dropped their midweek contest at California on Wednesday by a 4-3 margin in ten innings due to a bases-loaded walk.
While his average his below .300, TJ Rogers has been a heavy-hitting machine with a team-best and conference-leading ten home runs. Rogers has hit seven of his ten home runs in league play, including five those round trippers at home.
With a 5.39 team earned run average, the Dons' staff has been consistently supported by the trio of Adrian Valdez, Gauge Lockhart and Gabriel Barrett. Barrett has been the ace of the rotation with 52 strikeouts in 51.0 innings. Like Revay, the Dons' Nick Bacura was named to the NCBWA Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List with his 3.24 earned run average and seven saves in 16.2 innings.
The Tigers look to win to their first road series at San Francisco since when they first joined the WCC in 2014, taking two of three from the Dons that year. Last season, Pacific won the series at Klein Family Field against San Francisco by taking the final two games in the match-up. Sophomore
Diego Davis registered his first career four-hit game in the 16-12 series-clinching victory. Senior
Jake Tandy has two career home runs against the Dons, both of them as grand slams in wins across the last two seasons.
All three games will be streamed live on ESPN+ with a 2 p.m. first pitch on Friday, a 1 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday.
