STOCKTON, Calif. – In the WCC opener, Pacific put forth a valiant effort but could not win the final singles court and suffered a 4-3 setback to Saint Mary's on Sunday afternoon at the Eve Zimmerman Tennis Center.

The match got off to a strong start for Pacific (4-10) as both juniors Milena Maiorova and Indiya McLeod on court one and graduate Cindy Ung/junior Leyanne Hirota on court two scored wins to give the team the 1-0 lead.

For McLeod and Hirota in particular, the wins extend their streaks to seven and six consecutive matches respectively. Hirota's partner, Ung, won her fourth straight doubles appearance and has yet to be defeated anywhere but court one this season. Maiorova meanwhile has four consecutive doubles wins and is 3-1 on court one.

Both Maiorova and McLeod brought that momentum into the singles portion of the match as they each grinded out extremely close sets to score points for the Tigers. The latter of the two singles point scorers notched her tenth win of the season and has not lost a match since February 21. The former improved to 5-3 on court one.

Behind the pair, however, Pacific was on the wrong side of straight set matches on courts four, five and six and then put up a fierce fight on court three but could not hang on to a first set win and the match went in the way of Saint Mary's (5-8).

The team remains at home for two matches next weekend, hosting Gonzaga on Saturday and Washington State on Sunday. Both matches are scheduled for morning starts at 10 and 11 a.m. respectively.
