STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team put together a strong first half performance but could not contain Oregon State defensively in the second half, leading to a 70-60 defeat Saturday afternoon at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
The Tigers (10-15, 5-9 WCC) held the Beavers (18-9, 10-4 WCC) to 22 points in the opening half on 33% shooting but the driving force behind the low OSU offensive marks was a defense that forced ten turnovers and racked up eight steals. True freshman
Sophia Mindermann, sophomore
Daria Nestorov, redshirt sophomore
Stella Szabo and senior
Sydney Ward each accrued two steals in the opening 20 minutes to help limit the Beavers chances. The team would finish with 12 steals in the contest, finishing with consecutive games over ten steals for the first time this season.
In the second half fortunes reversed and Oregon State was able to pup up 48 points on 58.6% shooting (17-for-29).
Staying on the defensive end of the court, Ward eclipsed a personal milestone by grabbing her 500th career rebound. If current projections hold, she will enter the WCC tournament with 537 career boards – good for the 19-spot all-time. Offensively she scored 11 points in the game comprised of four field goals, a three-pointer and two free throws. Ward also had three assists.
Nestorov continued to re-find her rhythm offensively, matching her career-high 19 points on the afternoon. The sophomore went 9-for-15 from the floor and 1-for-1 from beyond the arc, a personal best in field goals made and tied for the third most in a single game by a Tiger this season. She also added two rebounds to her ledger.
Sophomore
Winner Bartholomew finished one rebound shy of her first double-double, going for 11 points and nine rebounds – tying the career high she set on opening night of the season. She also had two steals.
The Tigers remain in Stockton for the final two home games of the regular season, first hosting San Francisco on Thursday at 6 p.m. and then celebrating Senior Day on Saturday at 2 p.m. against Gonzaga. Both matches will be streamed on ESPN+.
