SAN DIEGO – Looking to earn a spot in the West Coast Conference Tournament for the first time since rejoining the league as an institution in 2013-14, the Pacific baseball program heads to San Diego for a three-game series beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. Fowler Park.
Â
Pacific (20-33, 8-13 WCC) sits in sixth-place and the top six teams reach the conference tournament. The Tigers are one game ahead of Santa Clara (20-27, 7-14, WCC) and Pepperdine (12-39, 7-14 WCC), and also in front of San Francisco (23-29, 9-15 WCC) which has no more games left. Pacific holds the head-to-head tiebreaker over all three teams.
Â
Though, it won't be easy as Pacific looks to take down a first-place San Diego (22-28, 16-5 WCC) squad that is playing for a regular season championship. The Toreros are two-games ahead of Gonzaga (24-24, 14-7 WCC) for first.
Â
Senior
JT Waldon leads the Tigers at the plate with a .341 batting average, which is top-10 in the conference. He's also knocked in a team-high 31 RBIs. Junior
Jake Tandy is hitting for a .318 average with team-highs of 10 doubles and five homers.
Â
Sophomore
Andrew Sloan is coming off a 2-for-3 night at Fresno State on Tuesday and has knocked a hit in three of the last four games. Freshman
Diego Davis enters play on a six-game hitting-streak and is 9-for-22 (.409) over that span.
Pacific is looking to win its first series against San Diego since taking two out of three in 2014 at home. The Tigers have never won a road series at USD.
Â
Game two of the series is at 6 p.m. Friday and the regular season finale is 1 p.m. Saturday. The conference tournament is slated for May 21-24 in Las Vegas.
