STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific men's golf program earned two of the three major West Coast Conference end-of-the-year golf awards, as announced by the conference Tuesday afternoon.
Sophomore
Carlos Astiazaran was named WCC Co-Player of the Year alongside Pepperdine's Mahanth Chirravuri while head coach
John Cook was recognized as the WCC Coach of the Year, marking the first duo to garner these awards since Pacific joined the conference in 2013.
Astiazaran becomes the first player to earn Player of the Year honors since Alex Edfort was named the Big West Conference's top golfer for the 2011-12 season. The native of Tucson, Arizona recorded the lowest stroke average in Pacific history with a 69.3 across 36 rounds during the regular season. Astiazaran's 69.3 mark was the lowest scoring average among qualified WCC golfers this season as he ranked as an individual No. 70 nationally, according to SCOREBOARD.
Astiazaran was crowned individual champion twice in his 2024-25 campaign, claiming first place at the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship and at the Nick Watney Invitational. During the WCC Championships, Astiazaran played a pivotal role in guiding the Tigers to a fourth-place finish at the tournament after sinking a pair of birdies on the final two holes and helping Pacific with the playoff over Saint Mary's last Saturday.
In addition to his WCC Co-Player of the Year recognition, Astiazaran collected a WCC All-Conference Team nod, which marks the second time he's received WCC honors after being named an Honorable Mention during the 2023-24 campaign. Astiazaran was named the West Coast Conference Men's Golfer of the Month for February.
Cook guided the Tigers through a historic regular season where the Tigers were crowned champions of 2024 The Goat at Navy and the Leadership & Golf Collegiate Championship in Seaside, California hosted by Saint Mary's. Pacific also battled to six top three finishes and the top four finish at the WCC Championship.
Astiazaran, Cook and the rest of the Pacific golf squad looks ahead to its fate for a berth into the NCAA Tournament with the selection show set for 10 a.m. PDT tomorrow on Golf Channel.
