FAIRFIELD, Calif. – The Pacific men's golf program completed the West Coast Conference Championship in fourth place after dropping the match play semifinal to Pepperdine Sunday at Green Valley Country Club.
The Tigers battled to the finish after a furious third-round comeback and playoff victory over Saint Mary's on Saturday to push Pacific into the match play semifinal today. Pepperdine, who Pacific fell to by a 3.5-1.5 margin in the semifinal, went on to play LMU in the match play final.
"We had a goal to get into match play at the start of the week and after a slow start in the first round, we kept battling the whole week," Pacific head coach
John Cook said. "We unfortunately didn't get the outcome we wanted there, but definitely a great finish for the Tigers!"
In the match play semifinal, the Tigers earned a point from junior
Timothy Jung in his match two contention over the Waves' Kris Kuvaas. Sophomore
Carlos Astiazaran competed to a draw with Mahanth Chirravuri, who was crowned the WCC individual champion on Saturday for Pepperdine. Redshirt junior
Daniel Henely, junior
Deitrek Gill and junior
Travis Robbie were the remaining three Tigers to compete in match play.
With a strong regular season resume, the Tigers seek an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, which would be the program's first team appearance since the 2012-13 season.
"Hopefully our body of work throughout the season will get us into the NCAA Regionals," Cook said. "These guys have worked extremely hard to give us an opportunity to get an at-large bid! We will be watching the selection show on Wednesday!"
Pacific awaits its fate as the field for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Wednesday, April 30 at 10 a.m. PDT on the Golf Channel.
