DAVIS, Calif. – Led by sophomore
Carlos Astiazaran and his runner-up finish individually, the Pacific men's golf program earned third place at the El Macero Classic on Sunday afternoon at El Macero Country Club, hosted by UC Davis.
The Tigers (+3/867) kept it close all weekend among the top three of the team leaderboard, trailing the eventual champion UC San Diego by two strokes. Pacific lands on the podium with its top three finish, marking the sixth time this season the team has finished in a first, second or third spot as a five-man group.
"In the windy conditions, we battled until the end," Pacific head coach
John Cook said. "Unfortunately, we came up a couple shots short. Carlos had a fantastic round today under the conditions and another fantastic individual finish. Now it's time to get ready for the WCC Championship!"
Astiazaran rose to finish second in the individual standings with a total of four-under par after carding a two-under par Sunday. For the Tucson, Arizona native, this weekend's performance represents his fourth top three finish of the season after most recently earning that plateau at the GCU Invitational.
All five in Pacific lineup ended up in the top half of the individual leaderboard with freshman
Brasen Briones (+3) and junior
Timothy Jung (+4) claiming top 20 spots. Junior
Travis Robbie and redshirt junior
Daniel Henely recorded eight-over pars that secured them ties for 35th place overall.
From an individual perspective, junior
Deitrek Gill played well to finish among the top three in a tie alongside UC San Diego's Nathan Tseng.
The Tigers have officially put a bow on their regular season and look ahead to the West Coast Conference Championship, which takes place April 25-27 in Fairfield, California.
