LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After finishing the regular season in the number seven spot, the Pacific women's basketball program will have to win five games in five days to capture the conference crowd, beginning with the winner of the tenth seed Pepperdine and eleventh seed San Diego match on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Orleans Arena.
Should Pacific (13-17, 9-11 WCC) face Pepperdine (8-21, 3-17 WCC), it would be looking for the first three game season sweep of the Waves in series history. The last time these two schools met was
in Stockton, where the Tigers handed Pepperdine a 68-41 loss. On the flip side, if the Tigers draw the Toreros (6-23, 2-18 WCC), it affords an opportunity to break the regular season split that saw each team pick up road wins over the other.
On a neutral court, Pepperdine has a 2-1 advantage over Pacific, but the Tigers own a 3-1 lead over San Diego.
Coming into the conference tournament, the team will be looking for senior guard
Anaya James and graduate guard
Liz Smith to replicate past performances at Orleans Arena. During last season's tournament James averaged 16.3 points per game in the three games played while in the 2023 edition of the tournament Smith carried the team with a 16.7 point per game average.
This season, both guards are coming into the tourney being selected to the second team WCC All-Conference team. Smith's recognition comes on the heels of leading the conference in steals and averaging a career best 14.2 points per game – as well as earning the crown for the most games and minutes played in Pacific history.
James also set a career-high in steals and became the second Tiger to eclipse 500 career assists en route to her inclusion.
Head Coach
Bradley Davis has guided the Tigers to the semifinals in both the last two tournaments and has reached the penultimate round of the tourney thrice in his nine previous appearances.
If the Tigers prevail over either Pepperdine or San Diego, they will face number six seed Saint Mary's on Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
Both Friday and potentially Saturday's matchups will be streamed on ESPN+.
