BERKELEY, Calif. – At day one of the Battle of the Bay, Pacific beach volleyball dropped a 5-0 decision to host California and then a 4-1 bout with UC Davis immediately after Saturday morning.
Game 1
Juniors
Josephine Kinlan and
Kelea Saxton Vaka held tough on court one in the first set, though ultimately dropping the set 21-19, before then conceding the match in straight sets. Courts two, three, four and five soon followed suit in straight sets, only once drawing closer than five points (freshman
Nadia Murray Ceriello and graduate
Margherita Giani on court two).
Game 2
Murray Ceriello and Giani bounced back from their game one defeat to score Pacific's (0-2) first point of the season, taking down their opponents in straight sets, 21-17 and 22-20. Despite being a graduate, Giani is in her first collegiate season of beach volleyball after neither Southern Illinois nor UTRGV (her previous schools) offered beach volleyball.
Sophomore
Makayla Beckett and senior
Ashley Davies nearly forced a third set on court four but were unable to pull off the extra points, falling 21-11 and 24-22.
Coming up next for the program are two matches in Stanford, Calif. To round out the Battle in the Bay. Action starts at 10 a.m. as the team faces Stanford before wrapping up the weekend's action with Santa Clara at noon.
