ST. GEORGE, UTAH – The Pacific swimming program is set to compete in 15th edition of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships across four days, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 19 through Saturday, Feb. 22 at the Human Performance Center Pool on the campus of Utah Tech.
Carrying winning records into the postseason, the Tigers' men's (5-2) and women's (6-4) squads will compete alongside Pepperdine, San Diego and Incarnate Word in this year's conference meet.
"I'm looking forward to celebrating this team's season of hard work," head coach
Katelyne Herrington said. "They have been training insanely hard this season, which has helped us carry successful momentum all season. The best is yet to come!"
Pacific last took to the pool the final weekend of January, securing a double victory over Simon Fraser on Senior Day. Senior
Alexia Ferguson, who recorded a season best in the 200 yard free against the Red Leafs and has the most points accumulated among the Tigers' women's swimmers, knows her teammates are ready to see their regular season success extend into this week of competition.
"I'm incredibly excited going into this week's conference meet," Ferguson said. "We've put in so much hard work all season, and I'm confident we're ready to show what we're capable of. I think we've surprised ourselves with how many personal bests we've achieved this season, and I'm looking forward to seeing more of that at conference. Every meet this semester has been a step toward this moment, and I believe we're in a great position to bring back home a conference championship."
Over the season, Pacific earned key dual victories over Cal State East Bay, Fresno Pacific, CSU Bakersfield, UC Santa Cruz and Simon Fraser. The men picked up a big road win at Cal Baptist while the women also notched a home win over Cal Poly.
Freshman Javier Lopez Guillen has been a bright spot for the men's team in his first-year campaign, breaking the school record earlier this season in the 200 yard fly with a time of 1:43.62. Guillen has totaled seven first place finishes in that event alone this season.
The upperclassmen on the men's side will also look to make their mark in this year's conference meets, highlighted by senior
Mitchell Hopper, senior
Leland Baltazar, junior Mattia Giurgevich, junior
Ethan Cole, graduate student
Alex Kurotori and graduate student
Aidan Scott.
"I feel great going into my last conference meet," Scott said. "I'm very confident in the work that my team and I have put in this year and I'm excited for the competitive action ahead."
