Swimming Prepares for Busy Home Slate, Hosts Cal Poly, UC Santa Barbara This Weekend

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific swimming program ramps up for a jam-packed home schedule to close out January, welcoming Cal Poly to the Eberhardt Aquatics Center on Friday at 3 pm and UC Santa Barbara Saturday at noon.

The Tigers host four home events across the next two weeks, beginning with the Mustangs and Gauchos in back-to-back days of competition. Pacific has been perfect at home with wins over Cal State East Bay, Fresno Pacific and CSU Bakersfield.

"We are at the point in our season where we are racing to be fast," head coach Katelyne Herrington said. "I'm excited for us to be wrapping up our season with a pair of back-to-back swim meet weekends at home. We finished the team's winter training camp this past weekend with a great meet against CBU and hope to build on the momentum this weekend. Cal Poly and UC Santa Barbara are both competitive teams and will need to race our best for a close meet."

The Tigers began the 2025 portion of the season with a split at California Baptist where the men's team (4-0) earned a hard-fought victory over the Lancers on the road while the women's team (4-2) fell narrowly in a seven-point decision.

Junior Mattia Giurgevich and senior Paige Sondgeroth were named MPSF Athletes of the Week on Tuesday, marking the third time this season that a pair of Tiger swimmers garnered MPSF Athlete of the Week honors. Giurgevich and Sondgeroth carried out pivotal roles in the team's effort against the Lancers last weekend, earning the most points individually on their respective sides.

Freshman Javier Lopez Guillen has been a force in the men's 200 yard fly and 500 yard free, securing first-place finishes at both home meets this season. Guillen also set a school record for the men's 200 yard fly with a time of 1:43.62 during a timed trial at the UNLV Invitational.

Senior Alexia Ferguson looks to continue her success at home where she has three top three finishes, including a first-place nod in the women's 100 yard free during the season opener. Freshman Josephine Fields also seeks to build on a strong first-year season, having set a personal best in the women's 200 yard free.

Pacific and Cal Poly meet for the third consecutive season with each side having won at home respectively during that stretch. The Tigers earned the victory over the Mustangs during the 2023 campaign. During that meet, Alex Kurotori finished first in the 200 back and 200 individual medley while Ethan Cole did the same in the 1000 free and 500 free.

Saturday marks the third time since 2020 that the Tigers welcome the Gauchos to Stockton. UC Santa Barbara won the last match-up during the 2023 season. The Pacific women's team won five years ago by a score of 149-108 while the men's squad seeks its first victory over the Gauchos in that span.

Both home events will be streamed live on Overnght with Friday's meet scheduled for 3 pm and Saturday's meet scheduled for noon.
