MORAGA, Calif. – Junior
Ethan Shaver turned in his longest outing as a Tiger, giving the Pacific baseball team a fighting chance in a series-opening 6-0 loss to Saint Mary's on Friday afternoon at Louis Guisto Field.
Shaver made his 13th start of the season, pitching 7.0 innings and allowing five earned runs on six hits. Shaver's five strikeouts in a game were tied for the second-most in an appearance this season.
The Tigers (10-39, 4-15 WCC) could not solve the starting pitcher of the Gaels (31-16, 14-5 WCC), stringing two hits and three walks in the contest.
Junior
Jakob Guardado recorded one of the hits for Pacific, extending his on-base streak to 14 games with a single to right field. Senior
Jacob Weiss went 1-for-3 with a single, making that three straight games with a hit.
Saint Mary's jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, scoring three times on four hits. The Gaels tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as the Gaels' Coleman Schmidt hit a three-run home run, giving the home team a 6-0 lead, which resulted in the final score.
The Tigers return to action at 1 p.m. tomorrow for game two of the three-game series against the Gaels.
