STOCKTON, Calif. – Wrapping up a five-game homestand, the Pacific baseball team welcomes in California on Little League Night, beginning at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Klein Family Field.
The Tigers are coming off a setback at home against LMU in a three-game series last week. Pacific hit a walk-off home run from sophomore
Tony Otis in the middle game of the series to secure a 4-3 victory in ten innings.
This week, Pacific faces California (24-14, 11-10 Pac-12) for its midweek game before traveling to San Francisco to resume West Coast Conference action.
Since 2006, the Tigers own a 7-15 record against the Golden Bears. Cal defeated Pacific. 17-1, earlier this season. In that contest, junior
Jakob Guardado went 1-for-2 with a single. The Tigers seek their first road victory against the Bears since 2021.
The Bears were picked to finish eighth In the Pac-12 preseason coaches' poll. Five members of their team were selected to the Pac-12 Preseason All-Conference Team. Junior catcher Caleb Lomavita has been named to the team for the second consecutive season. Joining him are Max Handron and Rodney Green Jr., and pitchers Ian May and Tyler Stasiowski.
So far this season, the Bears have series wins over Connecticut, UCLA, Washington State and Oregon State. Cal is 3-0 against WCC teams with victories over San Francisco, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's. Cal enters the matchup on an eight-game winning streak.
As one of four batters hitting over .300 on the team currently, Caleb Lomavita leads the Bears with a .351 batting average with a team-high 36 runs, 12 home runs and 44 RBIs.
On the mound, Luke Short is Cal's qualified leader in ERA (4.20) with a 3-1 record in six starts and 45.0 innings of work.
For the Tigers, sophomore
Jack Metcho and sophomore
Kaden Petersen have been consistent threats in the top of the batting order, hovering around the .250 mark. Metcho leads Pacific with 37 hits, 30 runs and four triples. Metcho's four triples rank tied for first on the conference leaderboard.
Senior
Chase Graves has demonstrated his patience at the plate with a team-high 26 walks, which places third in the WCC. Guardado enters the competition having reached base in ten consecutive games, the third longest streak by a Tiger this season.
Tuesday's game has a first pitch start time at 6 p.m. with the broadcast available on ESPN+.
