Pacific’s Home Midweek Matchup Welcomes Sacramento State

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific baseball team hosts a midweek matchup against Sacramento State, starting at 5 pm on Wednesday at Klein Family Field.

Last week, the Tigers (3-16) fell in a setback on the road against Lamar, but picked up a walk-off win by a 6-5 score against Utah Valley at home last Tuesday.

This week, Pacific welcomes in Sacramento State (8-11) before traveling to Pepperdine for a three-game road series to begin West Coast Conference play.

The Hornets play Nevada on Tuesday before making the short drive down to Stockton for Wednesday's contest. Sacramento State recently dropped two of three to Utah Tech in St. George.

In the last 26 meetings with the Hornets, the Tigers own a 12-14 record. Sacramento State won both contests last season and an earlier matchup this season at John Smith Field where Pacific fell, 11-4. In the effort, senior Chase Graves crushed a leadoff home run as Pacific jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second inning.

Picked to finish seventh in the preseason 2024 Western Athletic Conference coaches poll, the Hornets are led by Cesar Valero, who was named as one of 12 players to the WAC preseason all-conference team.

JP Smith stands at the forefront of the Hornets' offense, leading his team with a .293 batting average, 11 home runs and a team-high 22 RBIs.

Tyler Stewart serves as the go-to guy for the Sacramento State pitching staff, sporting a 4.68 earned run average in five starts and 25.0 innings of work.

For the Tigers, sophomore Kaden Petersen paces the team with a .311 batting average (19-for-61) with a pair of home runs and 10 RBIs. Petersen currently rides a nine-game hitting streak going back to the beginning of March.

Sophomore Jack Metcho has reached base safely in all but one game this season, earning a .304 batting average with a team-high 13 runs and 11 RBIs.

Looking at conference statistics, Metcho is tied for first in the WCC with three triples. Graves leads the WCC in walks with 19.

Junior Ethan Shaver represents the starting staff earned run average leader for Pacific with a 4.37 ERA in five starts and 22.2 innings of work. Shaver also leads Pacific with 19 strikeouts after a seven-strikeout performance in his last outing against Lamar.
