Tigers Stand in Sixth Place After Day One at Grand Canyon Invitational

PHOENIX – The Pacific men's golf team completed the first two rounds at the Grand Canyon Invitational, holding in sixth place out of 16 teams with a three-under-par 565 at the Grand Canyon Golf Course.

Hosts Grand Canyon are atop the standings through the first day with a 22-under-par 546. Cal State Fullerton and Washington State round out the podium after the opening pair of rounds.

"We had some great moments today on the course," Pacific head coach John Cook said. "We made a ton of birdies. We need to eliminate some of the bogies that we made today as a team. Hopefully we can post a low round tomorrow."

In the individual standings, the Lopes had the top finisher through two rounds with Tommaso Zorzetto pacing the competition with a 12-under-par 130.

Senior Alex Barclay leads the Tigers in a tie for 20th place with a two-under-par 140 (70-70). Fifth year Maverick Pavletich followed right behind Barlcay in a tie for 27th place with a one-under-par 141 (71-70).

Freshman Carlos Astiazaran and sophomore Timothy Jung finished in a tie for 39th place with a one-over-par 143. Jung recorded a team-low first round of 69, followed by a 74 in the second round. Astiazaran collected a 73 in the opening round before bouncing back with a 70 in the following round.

Senior Petr Janik rounded out the team scoring with a three-over-par 145 (73-72). In his first event as a Tiger, sophomore Deitrek Gill competed as an individual, earning a four-over-par 146 (73-73).
