SEASIDE, Calif. – Behind sophomore
Carlos Astiazaran's strong first day, the Pacific men's golf team completed the opening round in a tie for third place Monday at the Leadership and Golf Collegiate Championship, hosted by Saint Mary's and Seattle at Bayonet Golf Club.
The Tigers (-5/283) sit among the top three of a tightly packed 14-team field, trailing first-place BYU by two strokes.
"We had a solid start today," head coach
John Cook said. "The guys did a great job staying in the round after the hot start we had. We're looking forward to staying in the hunt tomorrow."
Astiazaran began the day on a high note, collecting an eagle and birdie in his first two holes en route to a four-under-par, holding a third place position individually.
Junior
Travis Robbie is not far behind Astiazaran, sitting comfortably in a tie for ninth place individually with a two-under-par. Junior
Deitrek Gill stands one-under-par for placement in the top 15 of the 84 participants.
Junior
Timothy Jung and redshirt junior
Daniel Henely round out the rest of the Tigers' five-man lineup with a two-over-par and a six-over-par respectively.
Freshman
Brasen Briones competed as an individual for a third-straight tournament, carding a four-over-par in the first round.
