STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific baseball (14-31, 6-18) wrapped up its home season with an 11-5 win over BYU (22-27, 11-13). The seniors led the way;
Marvcus Guarin got the start on the mound,
Tyler Stout picked up the win by pitching in relief, and
Quinlan Sweany got the final out to secure the win for the Tigers.
"Ben got banged up on Thursday night," said Head Coach
Chris Rodriguez. "He has just been playing with heart and grit. We talked before the bat, and I said, 'If you want to save your legs a little bit, you can make the ball land on the other side of the fence and jog around the bases.' Jeremy hit an absolute rocket to left after sitting back on a breaking ball. He did a tremendous job.
"Absolutely proud of those two guys; I am going to miss them big time."
At the plate, the graduates led the way;
Ben Nemivant and
Jeremy Lea had two hits and a home run each. Freshman
Jack Metcho drove in three runs on one hit. Seven different Tigers had a hit.
Guarin struck out seven in 4.0 innings pitched, allowing three runs on three hits. In five innings of relief, the Tigers only allowed three hits.
"Stout's line all weekend was tremendous," continued Rodriguez. "He pitched on Thursday and did an incredible job for us. To be able to bounce back today, fill up the zone, and put up a bunch of zeroes."
BYU took an early lead in the second, scoring three quick runs to put the Tigers in a hole. Pacific put two runs up in the bottom of the third with an RBI single from junior
Jacob Weiss and an RBI groundout from Metcho.
The power came out in the fourth inning for the Tigers, Nemivant homered to right field, and two batters later, Lea hit a moonshot to right field to put Pacific up by two runs.
Pacific added five more runs in the seventh; junior
Chase Graves singled up the middle, scoring the first run of the inning. Metcho singled up the middle to bring in two more runs. Freshmen
Tony Otis and
Peyton Miller singled up the middle to bring in two more runs and blow the game wide open for Pacific.
BYU added two in the eighth but could no longer cut into the lead. Freshman
Kaden Petersen drove in the 11th run of the game for Pacific, as a pitch with the bases loaded hit the outfielder.
Pacific is back in action on Tuesday for the final non-conference game of the season, traveling to Sacramento State. The first pitch will be at 6 p.m.
