Late Scoring Dooms Tigers Against Gaels

MORAGA, Calif. – The theme continued for Pacific baseball (10-23, 3-12) as the Tigers got into a high-scoring battle with Saint Mary's (14-17, 9-6) to conclude the series Sunday afternoon. The two teams scored eight runs in the final two innings, with the Gaels taking a 15-7 win.

Freshmen Peyton Miller and Jack Metcho both had two hits, and Metcho and graduate Jeremy Lea drove in two runs. Miller, junior Chase Graves and graduate Ben Nemivant all drove in one run. Freshman Jake Tandy scored two runs.

Freshman Jacob Smith started the game on the mound and pitched 2.2 innings with one strikeout and six runs on six hits. Graduate Michael Defelippi led the team with four strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched.

Saint Mary's started the scoring early, with a sac fly in the first inning. Metcho gave the Tigers the lead in the second inning with a two-RBI single up the middle to score Tandy and Miller. The Gaels scored three times in the bottom of the second to retake the lead.

Saint Mary's hit three home runs between the third and fourth inning to expand the lead to 6-2 heading into the game's back half. Pacific added two runs in the sixth, with Nemivant and Graves both driving in runs.

The Gaels scored once in the sixth before the Tigers cut into the lead. Miller drove in a run in the seventh before Lea doubled down the left-field line to bring in two runs and cut the Gaels' lead to just two. Saint Mary's would score six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to pull away from the Tigers and take the win.

Pacific is back home on Tuesday at 6 p.m., hosting Fresno State.
