#13 Tigers Ready to Host Rival #7 UC Davis

STOCKTON, Calif. – In a rematch of the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament, the #13 Pacific men's water polo team (9-3) takes on its regional rival in #7 UC Davis (11-6) at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 8 in the Chris Kjeldsen Pool at the Douglass M. Eberhardt Aquatics Center.
 
The Tigers returned home after earning a 4-0 record at the Gary Troyer Tournament and a clash with USC last weekend.
 
The top-15 showdown between Pacific and UC Davis marks the 29th time the two teams go head-to-head with the Tigers holding a 18-10 record over the Aggies. Most recently, the Tigers defeated the Aggies in the opening round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament by a score of 11-7. Pacific owns an 8-2 home record against UC Davis with the Tigers securing a 12-9 victory in the latest home meeting on Oct. 4, 2019.
 
The Tigers and Aggies have losses to California, UCLA and USC. UC Davis has also lost to Pepperdine, San Jose State and Long Beach State before winning four consecutive contests last weekend.
 
A couple Aggies to look out for on Sunday are senior Aleix Aznar Beltran and redshirt senior Aaron Voggenthaler. While Beltran leads UC Davis with 46 points in 17 games, Voggenthaler has a team-best 28 goals. In goal for the Aggies, redshirt senior Aaron Wilson has made 12 starts, collecting a 6-6 record with 155 saves and 24 steals. 
 
Pacific enters the competition with graduate student Stefan Vavic leading the charge offensively, pacing the Tigers' offense with a team-high 18 assists and 41 points. Vavic carries a five-game point streak into the game against the Aggies.
 
Junior Gil Gvishi holds the Pacific lead in goals (28) and shots (65). Last weekend, Gvishi recorded a career-best six goals in the win over Pomona-Pitzer and extended his season-long point streak to 12 games.
 
Defending the crease, senior Lewis Gale has started all 12 games for the Tigers, posting an 8-3 record with 83 saves and 19 steals.
