Tigers Fall to Bears in Tightly Contested Game

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Tigers (11-28, 2-13) and Bears (20-20, 10-11) were neck and neck all game, but Cal pulled away from the Tigers the for the 9-8 win. 

Thomas Gavello led the Tigers, tallying three hits, including two extra-base hits and a home run. Gavello also scored three runs and drove in three. Ben Nemivant also homered and scored two runs. Jarron Silva had two hits, scored a run and drove one in. Chase Graves had a double. 

Nick Swanson started the game, going two innings of hitless baseball with two strikeouts. Jackson Vaughan pitched the final two innings, allowing one hit and striking out one.

Gavello started the game out with a bang, hitting a three-run home run to right field in the first inning to launch the Tigers in front of the Bears. Cal responded with a home run of their own in the bottom of the third before the Tigers scored one more in the top of the fourth to keep the lead at three. 

Cal took the lead in the fourth, scoring four runs to sneak in front. Nemivant homered to right field to tie the game in the top of the fifth as both teams looked to take the lead for good. 

Cal grabbed momentum in the fifth, scoring four runs, including a three-run home run. The Tigers swung back as Jeremy Lea singled to drive in a run before a fielding error on the first baseman scored Silva. The Tigers were down by two heading into the ninth. With the bases loaded, Graves walked to bring in a run. However, the Tigers could not capitalize, and Cal escaped with the 9-8 win. 

This weekend the Tigers will be back home to host Saint Mary's. On Friday night, fans are welcomed to Klein Family Field for Family Fun and Fireworks Night, sponsored by Amy Scriven D.D.S.
