WCC Releases 2021 TIDES Racial and Gender Report Cards

The West Coast Conference released the Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport (TIDES) report, which provides a racial and gender report card for the 10 institutions. The report by Richard E. Lapchick and David L. Zimmerman delivers a comprehensive analysis of the hiring practices and adherence to the Russell Rule.

Pacific met the Russell Rule hiring commitment in six of the seven searches conducted. Two of the hired candidates were from underrepresented communities. In addition, Pacific received an A+ for its diversity and inclusion initiatives in the 2021 report. The information was collected in July 2021.

"Education and exposure are key components for the development of cultural change centered around diversity, equity, and inclusion; however, it is paramount that this work translates to action and opportunity," said director of athletics Janet Lucas. "The WCC's Russell Rule and the Tides Report are central to evaluating our efforts and understanding results. This analysis validates our progress while it recognizes our ongoing commitment relative to enhancing our diversity and creating a welcoming environment."

The WCC adopted the "Russell Rule" in 2020, the first conference wide diversity hiring commitment in Division I. Named in honor of WCC and NBA legend Bill Russell, the rule requires each member institution to include a member of a traditionally underrepresented community in the pool of final candidates for every athletic director, senior administrator, head coach and full-time assistant coach position in the athletics department.
