BERKELEY, Calif. – The #6 Pacific men's water polo team (21-6) is headed to the biggest stage in collegiate sports; the NCAA tournament.
The Tigers won an automatic bid to the national tournament after winning the 2022 Golden Coast Conference championship title. Pacific defeated Long Beach State 12-6 to capture the title.
Pacific takes on #5 UC Davis (19-7) for its opening round game of the NCAA tournament, hosted by Cal at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Dec 1.
"We started this season with something to prove, and that hasn't changed," said Head Coach
James Graham. "Thursday starts the NCAA tournament, and we can't wait to compete against the best teams in the nation. UC Davis is definitely one of them. It will be a tough contest, but every game at NCAAs always is. We know that, and we're ready."
The Tigers faced the Aggies once previously this season, falling 12-11 in sudden death overtime.
The Tigers are 17-10 against the Aggies since 2005, winning 11 of the last 14 games. Pacific won nine of the last 10 neutral matches between the two teams.
"We are super excited to play against UC Davis," said senior
Djordje Stanic. "The energy amongst our guys is unmatchable, and we're prepared 101 percent. Playing in the NCAA tournament is an amazing experience, and I am sure the game will be exciting."
The winner of the game will advance to the semifinals to face #2 Cal (21-2) on Saturday.
Pacific's opening-round game and all following games will be played at Spieker Aquatics Center on Cal's campus in Berkeley.
