Trio of Tigers Earn Olympic Bids

STOCKTON, Calif. – With each country announcing their respective rosters for the upcoming Olympic games, three former Pacific men's water polo student-athletes have been selected to compete in Tokyo.

Notably, Goran Tomasevic will represent Australia while Alex Obert and Ben Stevenson will don the red, white and blue for Team USA.

"So many factors go into being an Olympian. The timing, the competition and so much more," said James Graham, head coach of Pacific men's and women's water polo. "To think that we have six athletes from Pacific in our sport in the Olympics … It is just amazing and I could not be more proud."

Regarded as one of the most dominant Tigers in program history, Tomasevic was a three-time AWPCA All-American, made four All-MPSF teams and was named MPSF Freshman of the Year during his time in Stockton. Totaling 202 goals over his four years, Tomasevic is originally from Croatia but has called Australia home since his journey to Pacific.

Impressively, Obert becomes the second men's water polo alum to make their second Olympic appearance this year, joining former Tiger Balazs Erdelyi of Hungary as both were participants in the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Similar to Tomasevic, Obert was a three-time All-American as well and scored 157 goals in his four-year career at Pacific. Alongside Ben Hallock, he has developed into one of the main options for Team USA at two-meters after a strong international campaign. Using his physical force to find position, Obert recently advanced to the Champions League Final 8 with Croatian power VK JUG.

Rounding out the trio, Stevenson was also a three-time All-American and All-Conference selection as he notched 173 total goals during his time at Pacific. Most recently, the Nevada native brings a host of international experience to the group, including playing alongside Olympic teammate Dylan Woodhead with Glyfada in Athens, Greece.

Obert and Stevenson played on Pacific's 2013 NCAA runner-up team along with Erdelyi and Tomesevic.

"It is stunning to think that four players from our 2013 team are now playing in the same Olympics," said Graham. "You just don't see that sort of thing happen, and yet it did."

In total, Pacific will have six former or current student-athletes competing in the 2021 Tokyo Games:

Canadian women: Kyra Christmas and Clara Vulpisi

United States men: Alex Obert (two-time Olympian) and Ben Stevenson

Hungarian men: Balazs Erdelyi (two-time Olympian)

Australian men: Goran Tomasevic
