SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The final game of a three-game West Coast Conference series took place Sunday at Santa Clara Softball Stadium between the University of the Pacific Softball team and Santa Clara. In a five-inning run-rule game, the Tigers shut out SCU, 10-0. Through Sunday's action for Pacific, the Tigers are 13-12-1 overall and 3-3 in WCC play.
GAME SUMMARY
After
Madison Kahwaty led off the game reaching base on a hit-by-pitch,
Valeria Torres-Colon tripled to right field as Pacific quickly was up 1-0. After the triple,
Carly Lucchetti hit into a fielder's choice, but all runners were safe, including Torres-Colon who scored from third base.
Lucchetti stole second base later in the inning, then scored from second base on an RBI single from
Megan Wachholtz, as Pacific led 3-0 in the first inning.
With
Natalie Linker on second base in the top of the second, Kahwaty launched her first home run of the season to left center for a pair of runs, adding to the lead for the Tigers to 5-0.
Already up 5-0, the lead for the Tigers doubled in the fourth inning. A leadoff double by Linker, followed by an error on a sacrifice bunt by
Hanna Krosky, set Kahwaty up for more RBIs on the day. Kahwaty capitalized with a fielder's choice bunt, driving in Linker.
After Torres-Colon bunted for a single, Lucchetti doubled to drive in Krosky and Kahwaty for an 8-0 lead. Lucchetti reached third base on a throw.
Another fielder's choice bunt for Pacific, executed by
Jessica Mabrey, drove in Lucchetti.
The final run of the game was scored by Mabrey on a second RBI single from Wachholtz.
The Tigers held the Broncos scoreless for the fourth and fifth innings and cruised to a 10-0 run-rule shutout, taking two of three in the weekend series.
Myka Sutherlin pitched four scoreless innings and earned the win for a 5-1 record on the season allowing three hits and striking out three.
Amiyah Aponte pitched one scoreless inning to close out the game with two strikeouts.
NOTABLE STATS
- Kahwaty's home run was her first this season and seventh in her career at Pacific.
- With three RBIs on Sunday, Lucchetti now has 13 on the season, which leads the Tigers and is tied for eighth in the WCC. Her seven doubles is tied for second in the conference.
- Kahwaty, Lucchetti and Torres-Colon each have 10 stolen bases on the season, tied for second in the WCC.
- Kahwaty and Wachholtz had three RBIs and two respectively in the game.
- Sunday's run total was a season high for Pacific and also marked the first shutout of 2021.
