Pacific Awarded No. 3 Seed in GCC Tournament

STOCKTON, Calif. – With the recent conclusion of the 2021 regular season, the Pacific women's water polo team was officially awarded the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Golden Coast Conference tournament, which is set to be hosted at the University of the Pacific on Friday, Apr. 23 and Saturday, Apr. 24.

Different from years past, this year's tournament will feature the top four teams from the regular season with the top seed taking on the fourth seed in the first semifinal, followed by the No. 2 seed from the regular season taking on the No. 3 seed in the second semifinal. Both semifinals will be played on Friday with game times set for 12:00 and 3:00 pm PST. On Championship Saturday, the semifinal winners will play in the championship game on at 12:00 pm PST. The winner will earn an automatic bid to the 2021 National Collegiate Women's Water Polo Championships.

Coming down to the final weekend of action, the Tigers finished in a three-way tie atop the conference standings with Fresno State and San Diego State as all three schools tallied a 6-1 record in GCC play this season. Despite the tie, Pacific clinched at least a share of the regular season conference crown for the third consecutive year, dating back to 2017-18. Additionally, the Tigers will also seek their fourth consecutive tournament title as UOP has won three straight GCC tournaments dating back to 2016-17. These streaks do not include the 2020 season, which was abruptly halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

All four seeds in this year's tournament went deep into the tiebreaker rules, with the final seedings being determined by goal differential in games played against the teams tied. For the fourth seed, a three-way tie also presented itself between California Baptist, Azusa Pacific and LMU with all three programs sitting at 3-4 at the conclusion of conference play.

Fresno State earns the top spot with a goal differential of +2 against Pacific and San Diego State. The Aztecs take the No. 2 seed (even) followed by Pacific with the No. 3 seed (-2). Rounding out the field, CBU had a goal differential of +5, while Azusa Pacific was at -2 and LMU at -3.
