STOCKTON, Calif. – The Tigers (2-1) came out firing on Wednesday evening, looking to bounce back quickly from their home loss against UC Riverside. A large first half lead was enough as Pacific came out on top 78-65, over Cal State Bakersfield.
The Tigers leapt out to an early lead, as
Anaya James scored the first seven points for Pacific. As a team that scored 111 points in their last win, the Roadrunners were not going to back down from a fight. The two teams stayed close, with the Tigers up by four at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter the Tigers started to lay it on, outscoring the Roadrunners 26-7 and maintaining a double-digit lead for a majority of the quarter. Heading into halftime, freshman standout,
Anaya James had 14 points and seven rebounds, pacing the Tigers in both categories. "They were pressuring me, so I knew I had to attack the basket and then when the defense comes, I am ready to kick, just ready to look for my teammates," said freshman
Anaya James on her big night.
The two sides were much more even to start the second half from a scoring perspective. Neither team was able to gain much momentum as the biggest run of the quarter was a 6-0 run for the Roadrunners with just under three minutes in the quarter.
Saving the best for last, the fourth quarter was the highest scoring part of the game. Cal State Bakersfield started to chip away, playing improved defense and finding their shooting rhythm. The Roadrunners cut the Tigers lead from 20 at the start of the quarter, to nine with just under three minutes remaining. "We had enough composure to get things done," said Head Coach
Bradley Davis. "Credit to our team, no matter if they are freshman or sophomores, they are going to be that for the rest of the year. I thought they did a great job of having composure. I was really pleased with the improvement from the last game."
The Tigers bend but don't break defense worked, with the team hitting their free throws along with
Liz Smith scoring four points in the final minute to extend the lead to 15 and secure the win.
Freshmen led the way in the Tigers win as
Elizabeth Elliott had 15 points and four rebounds while taking a team best 11 rebounds.
Anaya James led the Tigers with 20 points and 10 assists to record her first career double-double and the first this season for the Tigers. Sophomore
Liz Smith was the final Tiger in double-digits, with 12 points and four rebounds.
The Tigers head out on a four-game road trip, starting with San Jose State this Saturday at 2:00 pm.
