Tigers Remember Former Guard Dorsey

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific men's basketball program is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Tiger guard Lafayette Dorsey

"Words cannot explain the wave of emotions that hit me when I got the news of Lafayette's passing," said head coach Damon Stoudamire. "He was a great kid…Laf was beloved around campus and the community not only for his scoring ability, but for his infectious smile that he warmed each room with when he entered. He will be missed. I'd also like to send my condolences to the Dorsey family during these difficult times."

Dorsey, who spent the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons with Pacific, redshirted at Nicholls State this past year after transferring from the program following his sophomore season. He was 23 years old.

"We are deeply saddened by the loss of a former Tiger student-athlete," Director of Athletics Janet Lucas said. "Lafayette was cherished by many as a teammate and friend, and our thoughts and prayers are with the Dorsey family."

Coming to UOP out of Dorsey High School in Los Angeles, the 6'1" guard made an immediate impact for the Tigers in his first year in Stockton. Overall, Dorsey appeared in 24 games in 2017-18, averaging 7.1 points and 2.6 rebounds while shooting 45% from the floor for Pacific.

During his sophomore season, the southern California native increased his averages in both points (10.7) and rebounds (2.8) while doubling his assist total from the previous year (31, had 15 assists in 2017-18). As one of only five Tigers to appear in all 32 games in 2018-19, Dorsey averaged 20.9 minutes per game while also shooting an impressive 86% from the free throw line.

Prior to his time in Stockton, Dorsey was an All-City guard at Dorsey High, leading the Dons to a 24-9 overall record and a Coliseum League title as a senior in 2016. Additionally, he was named league MVP, First Team All-City and CIF All-State after finishing with averages 21 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Following his high school career, Dorsey attended prep school at OnPoint Academy in Oklahoma City and was the team's second-leading scorer, averaging 22 points per game. Furthermore, he also averaged four assists and four rebounds per contest during his time with the Outlaws.

He is survived by his father, Lafayette Dorsey Sr., mother, Chelesa, and sister, Adoriah.

REMEMBERING LAFAYETTE DORSEY:

"I loved Lafayette...I loved him. You can never replace the relationship you had with someone… I'm just heartbroken for his family and for Lafayette." - Leonard Perry, Associate Head Coach

"There are not enough words in the dictionary to describe how wonderful Lafayette Dorsey truly was as a human being. He had an infectious personality and truly brought joy to the lives of everyone he was around. It was an absolute pleasure to know, love and be afforded the opportunity to coach and mentor Lafayette." -JayDee Luster, Assistant Coach

"Lafayette was such a special soul. During his time here, his impact was immeasurable. He had an infectious personality and a great heart. His laughter could fill a room and his ability to adapt to any situation will forever be missed. We will grieve over the loss of Laf, but we will also celebrate who he was and how he impacted everyone in such a positive light. I will never forget the time I got to spend with Laf. I will carry his memory with me forever." -Luke Wicks, Assistant Coach

"Laf had the biggest smile that would light up any room... All he wanted to do was play basketball and make his family proud. As someone who comes from the same city, this hurts on a different level. Sending my love and condolences to his family." -Justin Hawkins, Digital Media Specialist
