GAME NOTES
Last Weekend..
Pacific swept its first West Coast Conference series since 2016 at Santa Clara with a comeback win on Friday, a blowout on Saturday and a historic no-hitter on Sunday. In the three games combined, the Tigers outscored Santa Clara 23-11 in the three games.
Ryan Shreve's no-hitter...
Junior pitcher Ryan Shreve dealt just the fourth no-hitter in program history on Sunday at Santa Clara. He struck out nine and only allowed a base-runner by way of a hit by pitch. He retired 27 of the 28 batters he faced.
For his efforts, he was named NCBWA Player of the Week as well as the West Coast Conference Player of the Week and was a finalist for the @d1baseball Golden Spikes Performance of the Week. He finished third in the Twitter voting.
It was the first no-hitter for a Pacific pitcher since D.J. Houlton threw one in May of 2001 against UC Riverside. Houlton went on to pitch for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
It was one of two no-hitters in the NCAA last week. Saint Louis' Cody Luther threw a two-walk no-no on Saturday to St. Bonaventure.
Potent Pitching...
Tiger pitching has been outstanding this year. The staff ranks in the top-100 in:
- Walks per nine innings - 37th (3.39)
- WHIP - 49th (1.32)
- Strikeout-to-walk ratio - 57th (2.34)
- ERA - 76th (4.06)
- Shutouts - 79th (2)
- Hits allowed per nine - 82nd (8.19)
Individually Tigers are ranked:
Shutout the lights...
Nick Swanson has embraced the role of closer. He notched his fifth save on Saturday 3/30 against Pepperdine, good for 8th in a single-season. Eight will move him into second in single-season history. If he gets to 12, he'll hold the record. His 5 saves are 50th best in the nation. He has still not allowed an earned run through 18.1 innings and has struck out 18 batters.
The Tiger Way...
Pacific has found ways to generate offense this year and its been done by playing small ball. The Tigers are third in the nation in sac bunts with 38. 60 times the Tigers have gotten on base by getting hit by a pitch, good for 17th in the nation. Keaton Glover and Kevin Sandri rank inside the top-100 in the nation in sac bunts laid down.
Twin-Killings...
The Tigers have turned into a prominent double play threat up the middle. Pacific has turned 30 this year, good for the 35th most in the nation. In double plays per game, the Tigers are 47th in the nation, averaging 0.83 a contest.
Garko Era: Year Two...
Pacific head coach and former major-leaguer, Ryan Garko, enters his second season at the helm of the program this year. He and his staff helped guide the Tigers to a four-win improvement overall and a five-win improvement in West Coast Conference play. 2019 ushers in a new season as well as Garko's first recruiting class, which looks to make a mark this season.
