Tigers Down Cal in Conference Opener

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of the Pacific field hockey downed California in the conference opener on Sunday afternoon, 2-1.

Pacific improves to 7-5 on the season and 1-0 in conference action, while Cal falls to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in conference.

In Case You Missed It:

  • The Tigers came out on fire, as Taylor Dempsey dumped a high pass to Rylee Comeau, who batted the ball in over the keeper's shoulder for the 1-0 lead in the first minute of the game.
  • Marlise van Tonder held a shutout through the first half.
  • In the final seven minutes of the game, the Tigers took a 2-0 lead, as Ash Rutherford netted her first goal of the season, after receiving a pass from Comeau.
  • Due to the 2-0 lead by Pacific, Cal was forced to pull their goalie with six minutes remaining to receive an extra player on the field.
  • The Golden Bears took advantage of the extra player and scored 30 seconds later in response to the Pacific goal to trail, 2-1, and came up short.

  • Both teams landed four shots on target.
  • Van Tonder made three saves, with two in the first shutout.
