Tigers Slip in Overtime to #12 Syracuse

SYRACUSE, N.Y. –The University of the Pacific field hockey team fell in a nail-biter match with #12 Syracuse, 3-2, in overtime on Friday afternoon.

In Case You Missed It:

  • Within the first five minutes of the game the Tigers came out on fire, as Kriekie van Wyk netted her ninth goal of the season off a penalty corner to give Pacific a 1-0 lead.
  • With less than a minute remaining in the first half, de Kock pushed another penalty corner into Ash Rutherford for the stop to allow van Wyk to notch the second goal of the game and give Pacific a 2-0 lead.
  • Late in the second half, Syracuse found the net, as Claire Cooke put the ball in play from the corner to Carolin Hoffman for the stop to set up Roos Weers for the goal and cut the Tigers lead in half, 2-1.
  • With less than five minutes remaining, Syracuse forced overtime, knotting a second goal off a penalty corner to tie it, 2-2, and went on to claim the victory, 3-2, in overtime.

By the Numbers:

  • Marlise van Tonder faced 12 shots, making four saves.
  • The Orange edged the Tigers out on shots, 12-7.
  • Van Wyk tallied six shots, landing three on target, and scoring two goals for the Tigers.

Coach Smith's Comments:
"We took a massive step tonight with our play and our belief in ourselves. Although we came up short, we will be better for tonight. Everyone gave everything and in the end, it just wasn't enough against a tremendously talented Syracuse team."
