#20 Stanford Hands Pacific First Conference Loss

STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of the Pacific field hockey team came up short in a tight battle to #20 Stanford on Friday afternoon, 4-2.

Pacific falls to 8-7 on the season and 2-1 in conference, while the Cardinal improve to 11-4 overall and 3-0 in conference.

In Case You Missed It:

  • Both teams battled in the first half, as Pacific held Stanford scoreless. Pacific outshot the Cardinal, 10-2.
  • #20 Stanford got a penalty corner at the first half buzzer and lead scorer Corinne Zanolli hit a shot to score off the penalty corner to take a 1-0 lead with 0:00 remaining in the first.
  • In the second half, both teams started heating up. Zanolli scored another quick goal one minute into the half to take a 2-1 lead.
  • Pacific got on the scoreboard 10 minutes later with a goal by Rylee Comeau off a rebounded shot by Gaby de Kock to trail 2-1.
  • The Cardinal scored two more goals to increase the lead to 4-1.
  • Pacific grabbed the final shot and goal of the game off a penalty corner. Gaby de Kock pushed the ball in to Ash Rutherford for the stop to set up Kriekie van Wyk for the goal.

By the Numbers:

  • Pacific dominated the offensive game outshooting the Cardinal, 17-7. The Tigers landed 15 of those on target.
  • Van Wyk led all offensive players going 8-for-8 with one goal.
  • De Kock tied her career-high assists with two.

Coach Smith's Comments:

  • "We dominated every aspect of the game today except the finishing at both ends of the field. Until we finish plays at both ends, we will struggle to compete in these types of games."
  • "We will go back to practice tomorrow and work on it. Congratulations to Stanford, I thought they were exceptional inside our defensive circle and played a great game."

Up Next:

  • Pacific hosts UC Davis on Senior Day on Sunday, October 21, for its final home game of the season. Game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
